To be Shown at The PSP Southampton Boat Show for the First Time
September 12-21st Berth 273
Bass Harbor, Maine: Morris Yachts is pleased to be showing the
M36 for the first time at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. Not new to
the European boat show circuit, the firm has shown in Düsseldorf
for the past two years and showed in HISWA last fall and has been
patiently waiting their turn on the SBS waiting list. Members
of the Morris sales team will fly to Brittany, France to sail M36
Philovent II around the coast of France and across the Channel to
Southampton.
Morris teamed up with the venerable firm of Sparkman &
Stephens to produce the M36 Daysailer in 2002. The M36 mixes
classic looks and performance. The boat is designed to be simple to
handle, making it easy to go out for just an hour, yet big enough
to accommodate family and friends for the day. A timeless sheer and
long graceful overhangs give the M36 a distinct look that will turn
heads. Its traditional appearance may be highlighted with teak
decks and varnished teak cladding. To date, Morris has delivered 54
new M36s worldwide to owners in the US, Netherlands, Ireland,
France, Italy, Hong Kong and Japan.
The collaboration between the two firms started back in 2001
when Morris Yachts was hired to restore a 32-foot Sparkman &
Stephens design named Stormy for a Sparkman & Stephens
Rendezvous at Mystic Seaport. Stormy, originally named Poppy,
Sparkman & Stephens Design No. 1765, was built in
1965 by Molish in Denmark for Madison Haythe of Greenwich,
Connecticut. She is mahogany planked over laminated oak frames and
is bright finished throughout. The restored Stormy was the standout
of the rendezvous. As a result of all the interest in Stormy at
Mystic, Sparkman & Stephens started to sketch out a new
daysailer with styling derived from Stormy. When Morris Yachts saw
this new design, a partnership was formed and the M36 was born.
³This boat will be perfect for those who love to sail but find
that time or a crew is not always available,² said Cuyler Morris.
³We also believe that this will be a wonderful first boat for those
entering the pastime of sailing.²
As projected by the Morris team, the M36 appeals to all sailors
from all over the globe. The company has delivered M36s all over
the country and all over the globe - Ireland, California, Florida,
Hong Kong, Italy, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Japan, France, the
Netherlands and of course her home state of Maine. Lake
destinations are just as popular as salt water with boats making
their home on Lake Tahoe, Lake Champlain, and Georgian Bay. Many
owners, taking advantage of the boats easy truckabilty, are moving
the boat with the season and their pleasure from Maine to Palm
Beach; Lake Tahoe to San Francisco, Long Island Sound to Lake
Champlain.
The owners are as diverse as the destinations varying from
seasoned sailors who don¹t have the time or desire to manage a big
boat to beginners. Long time sailors love this boat because
they can single-hand her and getting off the dock for a sail takes
only minutes. Beginners will be able to competently take to
the sport quickly due to the boat¹s responsiveness and
straightforward sail handling. A couple of owners are avid racers
and plan to actively campaign the boat in Long Island Sound and
Europe.
The attraction to this boat is two fold - it is traditional in
looks but modern in performance. The hull and appendages are
designed and built for fast and nimble performance. The keel has a
high aspect ratio fin and a bulb for maximum stability and minimum
drag. Three keel configurations are available 1.37 meters, 1.6
meters and 1.98 meters. A carbon mast and a carbon spade rudder
provide further performance advantages. Upwind and off-wind, the
M36 will not disappoint.
Sail handling is simple with all sheets, halyards and control
lines run under deck to two control/winch pods in the cockpit just
forward of the wheel and within easy reach of the helmsman. The jib
is self-tacking making upwind work no work at all. An electric
winch is standard making sail raising and sheeting in a breeze even
easier. The only sheets running above deck are for the asymmetric
spinnaker, and these are led aft to winches also within the
helmsman's reach.
Forward of the control pods, the cockpit seats are over six feet
in length, suitable for seating for six adults or lying down in the
sun. Crew can easily help set and trim the sails from forward of
the control pods without interfering with the helmsman.
A small cabin is incorporated into the design that contains a
galley, day head, sitting area and plenty of storage. The port and
starboard settees are long enough to lie down on, where one might
get out of the weather, relax, read a book or take a nap. Offered
as an option, forward of the mast there is plenty of room to fit a
large, double berth. The mechanical and system installations
are simple and straightforward so you spend your time sailing your
boat instead of maintaining it. A 21 hp three cylinder Yanmar with
saildrive and a two-blade Flex-o-Fold propeller provides auxiliary
power.
To date the company has sold 74 M-Series yachts since the first
M36 was launched in 2004. All yachts in the M-Series are designed
by Sparkman & Stephens and range in length from 29-52feet. The
new Morris M29 is being introduced to the public this fall. Hull 1
will launch in February 2009.
