Traditional power catamarans are rarely attractive, but the
latest twin-hulled Motorcat MC29 is arguably stylish, sexy and
beautifully designed. Featuring on stand J11 at the
Southampton Boat Show this year, this fuel efficient, ‘unsinkable’
powerboat provides safe, affordable boating for the family.
“Every so often a boat comes along that breaks new ground and
opens up new possibilities. At first glance the MC29 appears a
fairly traditional monohull, but closer inspection reveals the
radical and clever hull design. It is a highly efficient catamaran
in disguise.” Victor Aspey, Managing Director, Motorcats
Ltd.
Rarely is fuel efficiency an important priority in power boat
design, yet the world's supply of fossil fuel is finite and rapidly
diminishing, and the costs of fuel are escalating. When
Canadian designers, Jerry Kostanski and Grahame Shannon designed
this boat, it was intended as an economical coastal cruiser, and
tests have shown it to be exactly that.
More fuel efficient than traditional monohulls, her narrow
displacement hulls cut smoothly through everyday chop and move
easily through the water generating minimum wake.
This light, buoyant boat tends to stay on top of the water and will
not take as much of a beating from the seas as a heavy
boat. With effectively 3 hulls and 2 watertight bulkheads, she
is as unsinkable as possible for a boat to be.
The interior is bright and airy with large windows and a raised
dinette. The forward cabin has a huge double berth, 2
meters (6' - 9") long. Headroom in the main cabin is also near 2
meters; so tall people can use this boat without stooping.
The standard setup is ideal for a couple with occasional guests
(convertible dinette).
This stable 4-berth cruiser with its low costs of ownership will
appeal to the first time family buyer, or experienced sailor moving
into power. Fishermen will appreciate the stable platform and open
cockpit, which can also be enclosed with a canvas shelter (for
British weather).
