Learn Semaphore
Semaphore was developed about
200 years ago – well before the invention of the telephone, radio
or Internet – and in its time this ‘revolutionary’ communication
system was taken up with as much enthusiasm as texting is
today.
Semaphore is a way of sending and
receiving messages between two people within sight of each other.
Words are spelled out by simply changing the position of a pair of
hand-held flags to indicate the required letter of the
alphabet. It is still used by NATO’s land and sea forces when
radio silence is essential and really good operators can send and
receive text at over 30 words a minute!
When you come to the Record Breaker Stage Show you will be given your
very own flags to use so you can get involved and help us to try
and set a new Semaphore sending record. Get practicing now, learn
the word we are going to send 'RECORD'.
