David Brooks will attempt to become the first person to
row 13,000 miles across the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in a single
expedition, solo. His challenge will start in La Gomera (Canary
Islands), as part of the Woodvale-Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race
and finish in Australia. In the process, he is raising money for
the RNLI, Guide Dogs and the Sidmouth Lifeboat.
Dave Brooks has a love for the outdoors and the raw power
of the elements ( the weather) which spurred him to develop a keen
interest in meteorology. So rather than take an interest in any
specific sport or past-time he's obsessive about any sport that
relies on the weather. Whether "goat boating" (kayak surfing) in
North Devon and Cornwall, kayaking the River Dart in spate (high
flow), skiing in the Alps or mountaineering in Snowdonia, the
rush he gets from knowing that the environment is in charge, and
not him.
This last point is what has lead Dave Brooks down the path
he's currently treading, to row the Atlantic and Pacific
Oceans. Not out to set predesignated records or get famous,
but relishing the opportunity to get to grips with another facet of
the environment which he is not otherwise accustomed to (the
oceans) and to push the boundaries of human endeavour in the
process.
