Challenge Wales
Jump onboard the Welsh Sail Training Vessel

Challenge Wales is a 72-ft round-the-world yacht which
previously raced around the world twice in the BT Global Challenge
Races. Now the Challenge Wales yacht is the largest sail training
vessel in Wales but also offers exciting big boat sailing
experiences for individuals, groups and companies.
The yacht, whose home port is Penarth Marina, in Cardiff Bay,
South Wales, is owned and managed by the Welsh charity, also called
Challenge Wales with the aim of teaching young people (aged 12 to
25 years) social and personal skills such as; teamwork,
communication, discipline, responsibility, respect for others and
self-confidence while putting them into a positive ‘can-do’ and
sometimes challenging environment.
When adults enjoy thrilling big boat sailing days, weekend trips
and team building days on Challenge Wales they are directly
contributing to creating a bursary fund for young people enabling
more youngsters to experience the positive benefits of sail
training. Companies with a Corporate Social Responsibility
programme can also get involved with volunteering opportunities
that are available with Challenge Wales.
For young people, Challenge Wales offers a great residential
opportunity. Even more so now that Challenge Wales is an Approved
Activity Provider for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, so
perfect for Gold Residential activity and as a Royal Yachting
Association Training Centre young people can end their sailing
experiences with us with a Start Yachting or Competent Crew
certificate.
Challenge Wales sails with up to 18 people on board. This
includes six Challenge Wales crew and up to twelve guests, and for
the guests joining Challenge Wales no sailing experience is
necessary. Due to the yachts prestigious racing background
and her dominating size she is perfect as a high profile vehicle
for corporate activity, chartering opportunities, such as the
famous Round the Island Race, Cowes, and fantastic for exploring
some of the Welsh, English and Irish coastline from the sea.
Challenge Wales is using the PSP Southampton Boat Show to raise
the profile of the young persons work the charity is undertaking as
well as different adult sailing opportunities which ‘give something
back’. The yacht will be on show on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22
September at the boat show, berth no: M542
