An estimated 900 million people watched the London 2012 Olympics
opening ceremony and saw David Beckham roaring down the Thames in a
heavily customised Bladerunner 35 RIB, carrying Jade Bailey and the
Olympic torch on the last leg of the flame’s journey.
The run started west of Tower Bridge and headed down river
towards Limehouse, into the Basin’s lock and through the canal
network all the way to the Olympic Park. After speeding through the
final part of the ‘Limehouse cut’ with fireworks exploding along
the canal sides, the boat docked at the custom made berth and the
torch was safely handed over to Sir Steve Redgrave who ran carrying
it into the Park to the 80,000 strong cheering crowds.
