British Marine Federation at the PSP Southampton Boat Show
BMF Technical Day
BMF’s Technical Team is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the
Recreational Craft Directive at the BMF Technical Day on Wednesday
17 September at the PSP Southampton Boat Show. A short
presentation on the history, successes, myths and facts of the RCD
will open the event at 11am, which will be followed by the
opportunity to discuss detailed issues with the team and other
experts from the world of the RCD and ISO
standards.
Buying a Boat
Buying a boat is a big decision and the BMF wants to make sure that
people ask all the right questions before making that purchase of a
lifetime. To help, the BMF has put together some essential
points for consideration before completing the purchase:
• Make sure a contract is used for the purchase of the boat,
whether a new build, second-hand boat, or new boat. If you use a
BMF member company, they will have access to standard BMF
contracts
• If the boat is second hand, ensure you obtain an independent
survey before purchasing. If you are having a boat built, consider
the use of surveys during the building process
• Make sure you understand what payment is required and when
payments are due. When buying a second hand boat on brokerage ask
whether the purchase monies will be kept in a client account during
the process
• Ask what documentation will be provided with the boat,
especially in the case of a second hand boat. Title
documentation, proof of VAT payment and RCD compliance are
particularly important
• Consider undertaking specific training in order to enjoy the
full potential of your boat. Visit www.marineleisure.co.uk for a
list of RYA recognised marine training providers
For more information on buying a boat visit the BMF stand at the
Show, E52 in Mayflower Park or download a leaflet from www.britishmarine.co.uk.
Legal Surgeries
BMF members can take advantage of free legal advice at the PSP
Southampton Boat Show. Representatives from Shoosmiths, HBJ
Gateley Wareing, Blake Lapthorn, Moore Blatch and Thomas Cooper
will be available in the BMF Members and Exhibitors Lounge from
Monday 15 – Friday 19 September.
Topics include queries regarding employment law, sales and purchase
legislation, contractual obligations, problems with the rejection
of goods and advice on debt recovery and insurance matters.
The Maritime Media Awards 2008
After 12 years a new direction has been given to the Annual
Maritime Media Awards, organized by The Maritime Foundation, with a
focus more on current affairs. The three main Awards
provide recognition for individuals in maritime journalism,
maritime literature and maritime programmes. This year two
further Awards will also be presented: the Desmond Wettern Fleet
Award for the Royal Naval unit which has best contributed to public
awareness and, more importantly for the leisure marine industry and
the BMF, the Maritime Fellowship Award for outstanding service to a
specific maritime sector, which this year is Maritime Leisure.
The nominations for the Maritime Fellowship Award, as voted by
the BMF Management Board, are: Peter Nicholson from Camper and
Nicholson, Robert Braithwaite from Sunseeker and David King from
Princess. The winner will be announced at the Awards Dinner
at the Institute of Directors on Thursday 30 October 2008, with the
presentation being made by Countess Mountbatten.
Julian Parker OBE, Chairman of the Awards Committee
stated, “There are two main reasons to hold such an
event. The first is to recognise journalists, writers, authors and
programme makers who have produced the best maritime features
during the past year and, secondly to enhance the public awareness
of the critical relationship our island nation has with the
sea.”

Superyacht UK at the Monaco Yacht Show
The Red Arrows will form the highlight of British Excellence and
Superyacht UK’s (SYUK) presence at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show.
The award winning Royal Air Force display team will be performing a
30 minute routine in front of the outer breakwater at Monaco
Harbour. The event will be followed by the chance for those
attending to ‘Meet the Pilots’ at a SYUK evening reception.
First established in 1965, the Red Arrows have flown over 4,000
displays in 52 countries. They aim to act as ambassadors for Great
Britain overseas and to support UK industry by demonstrating the
capabilities of British equipment and expertise.
The organisation of the display results from the initiative of
several members of SYUK and is designed to celebrate British
excellence in the industry. Led by Pendennis and supported by
SYUK the group also includes The Yacht Report, Superyacht World,
Superyacht Business, Underwriting Risk Services Ltd, Burgess and
DEVONPORT.
The Monaco Yacht Show is an ideal opportunity to bring the
successful superyacht industry in the UK and its new project and
product launches to international attention. The Superyacht
industry in the UK employs over 3000 people and had a turnover of
£300m pounds based on 2006/7 figures.
Superyacht UK representatives have attended the Monaco event for
the last 8 years, and in addition to the appearance of the Red
Arrows, will be helping promote British industry through on-site
support for members including a meeting pavilion located in the
heart of the Show with over 27 companies. The new annual
statistics for the 2007/08 value of the UK Superyacht sector will
also be announced at the Show.
Toby Allies, Head of Sales and Marketing at Pendennis, said:
“I always thought that having a Red Arrows display at the Monaco
Yacht Show was just a pipe dream, but after some hard work behind
the scenes it has become a reality. Once the rest of the SYUK
committee heard about our proposal, they instantly got behind it
and the momentum grew from there.
“For us personally having the Red Arrows at Monaco provides yet
another highlight for our 20th anniversary year - following on from
the success of the Pendennis Cup in August and our reception at the
St Barths Bucket in March.”
Tom Chant, International Commercial Manager for Superyacht UK
added:
“The Red Arrows are a powerful symbol of British excellence and
it is fantastic for the industry that they will be appearing at
this year’s show. Superyacht UK will be working extremely hard to
support our members in Monaco as they seek to promote British
expertise and success to the international Superyacht community.
I’m looking forward to a productive and successful time in
Monaco.
“Our thanks go to Pendennis, The Yacht Report, Superyacht World,
Superyacht Business, Underwriting Risk Services Ltd, Burgess,
DEVONPORT and the team at Monaco Yacht Show for their support in
hosting the Red Arrows.”
The display is currently scheduled to take place on Thursday
25th September at 15.30 outside the outer breakwater of Monaco
harbour.
