This year’s Southampton International Boat Show, powered by Borrow a boat, is thrilled to host to British Ocean Racing skipper Pip Hare and her boat Superbigou
Pip is a British sailor, based in Poole and next year will be taking her place on the start line of the Vendee Globe Race with the intention of becoming the 10th British sailor and the 8th woman ever to compete in this epic non-stop, solo race around the world.
As a British female entry to the Vendee she is flying the flag for British sailing and the whole maritime community. Fewer than 100 skippers have ever completed the Vendee Globe. To put that in context over 5000 people have summited Everest and 12 men have walked on the moon.
Pip has over a decade of solo ocean racing experience with multiple podium finishes and is the only British sailor to finish two Mini Transat Races. Her impressive track record continues off the water with experience in multiple endurance events including ultra-marathons. In 2017 Pip set a world first for completing the 3 Peaks Yacht Race in a team of two with fell runner Charles Hill, both completing all aspects of the course together (A race she won 2 years previously with the all-female ‘Team Aparito’).
The Vendee Globe is a single-handed, non-stop, circumnavigation of the globe. The race covers a total distance of over 24,000miles and means skippers are at sea, unsupported, for in the region of 3 months. With challenges such as facing the Southern Ocean where the average wave heights is 12m, the race is not for the faint hearted and pushes individuals to the absolute limits of human ability.
Head down to the Marina at The Show to meet Pip and get a taste for life on board a round-the-world Boat
