The Boat Building Academy provides full-time, highly practical skills training with the emphasis on ‘hands-on’ learning.
Our flagship 40 week Boat Building course teaches men and women how to build boats to industry standards. There is no strict skill requirement to join the course, all that is asked for is enthusiasm and dedication to the training. Tuition is practical and ‘hands-on’, with minimal classroom learning. For students looking to work in the industry, there is an optional City & Guilds qualification (Boat Building Maintenance & Support). The course also allows students the opportunity to build their own boat, discussed with the tutors early on in course. All boats built at the Academy since 2006 can be viewed here.
Since its inception in 2008, the 12 week Furniture Making course has produced a stream of capable woodworkers who have worked in all aspects of the industry. Highly practical and intensive in nature, the course furnishes students with the key foundational skills required by the industry. In the latter part of the course students make a piece of furniture of their own design. For May 2020, the Academy is launching the 12 week Advanced Furniture Making course, exploring hand & machine tools, jigs and moulds for batch production, cabinet and chair making, presentation drawings and business studies. The final four weeks of the course will be spent producing a piece to gallery standard.
The 2 to 5 day short courses cover a wide variety of subjects, ranging from 2 day introductory courses in woodworking and boat building, to more specialised courses such as GRP Repairs and Wooden Boat Restoration
