BLADE HALO electric outboard launched at Southampton Boat Show 2025

LAUNCHING AT SOUTHAMPTON BOAT SHOW – NESTAWAY BOATS STAND P075

The new-for-2025 Blade Halo electric outboard motor is a game-changer, rated for a continuous power output of 3kW, with up to 3.2kW for brief periods (when accelerating or getting up on the plane, etc). Whilst other electric outboards in that power range do exist, none of those rivals have an integral battery – the Blade Halo has a removable battery located in its shaft. And it’s a whopper of a battery too, offering a huge 1700Wh capacity… the largest shaft-integrated battery on the market (next largest is the Torqeedo XP, at 1425Wh).

That powerful motor and big battery doesn’t make the Blade Halo hopelessly heavy though. Remarkably the TOTAL weight is only 22kg, of which 8kg is the removable battery. So your “pass up and down weight” – if you’re putting it on a yacht tender for example – is only 14kg. Even with the battery fitted it’s significantly lighter than the 4-6hp petrol motors to which it can reasonably be compared (they’re typically 25-27kg).

Going back to the power output, the Blade Halo will get a small lightly-loaded dinghy on the plane. This has long been the Holy Grail for integrated battery electric outboards, now (finally!) that outboard exists. To put that another way, this is an electric outboard that will get your dinghy on the plane… without the need for a big separate battery or fiddly cables straggling around the boat!

The Blade Halo – as is typical with electric motors – also has masses of torque, making it a superb option for small dayboats and yachts. We have often been told by our many customers in that market: “1kW is usually enough, but not always”. That made the (announced 2024) Torqeedo Travel XP (1.6kW power) look attractive, but the Blade Halo is more powerful, has significantly more battery capacity (1700Wh vs 1425Wh) and is much cheaper than the XP. The Halo is actually closer in price to the market-leading ePropulsion Spirit PLUS, which is a 1kW motor with a 1276Wh battery capacity.

This size of motor with substantial battery range should also appeal to those requiring a backup/auxiliary motor for their fishing boat or RIB. The relatively narrow (port to starboard) dimensions mean Halo will fit on limited-width transoms – alongside your main outboard – where many petrol (and other electric outboards) can’t. And unlike a petrol “backup” there’s no carburetor to gum up through lack of use, no annual servicing bill, and very little to go wrong. (Electric outboards in general are far more reliable than petrol ones.)

If you want/need more battery capacity than the 1.7kWh supplied with the Halo, external batteries can also be used. Blade themselves make a very nice 5kWh LiFePO4 (the safest chemistry) battery weighing only 35kg. There are many other options too, talk to us!
