The oceans are vital to us all, bringing all the joy, freedom and anticipation we love to enjoy and endure as fortunate boat lovers. #WorldOceansDay highlights how we can all make a positive difference no matter how big or small a change. The fact is, 8m tonnes of plastic ends up in our oceans, how can we work together to help reduce this and protect our environment? We have pulled together a few interesting facts and tips to help you get started, so let’s celebrate #WorldOceansDay together!

It is extremely important for us, at TheYachtMarket.com Southampton Boat Show, to help commit to raising awareness of the importance of keeping our oceans clean by finding solutions that are environmentally friendly and cause the least harm to sea life. What does the #WorldOceansDay stand for?
The aim of the day is to raise awareness of how we can “prevent plastic pollution and encourage solutions for a healthy ocean” and secure a better future.
Protect what you love. Encourage your family, friends and local community to start creating a better future. Working together, we will protect our shared ocean. In brief, here are the key objectives outlined by #WorldOceansDay:
Change perspective – encourage individuals to think about what the oceans mean to them
Learn – discover the wealth of diverse and beautiful ocean creatures and habitats, how our daily actions affect them
Change our ways – we are all linked to, and through, the oceans! Making small changes to your everyday habits will make a difference
Celebrate – whether you live inland or on the coast, we are all connected to the oceans. Take the time to think about how the oceans affect you, and how you affect the oceans, and then organize or participate in activities that celebrate our oceans.

You can help remove the plastic by volunteering to help clear local beaches and rivers
Buy reusable products like Bags for Life and Tupperware
Invest in a refillable glass or metal bottle for your beverages
Don’t use single use plastic straws! Instead invest in reusable metal or glass straws
Recycle your plastic
Avoid any oil and gas spillages by understanding how much your boat’s tank can hold
Ensure you fuel your boat at the dock and never while in the water
Clean your boat as often as possible with fresh water
Source and use environmentally friendly cleaning products to avoid chemicals that may be harmful or destructive
